Bedrooms and other Yin locations, including the location of the kitchen stove, are ideal areas to locate where there is a positive Sitting Star. Remember, Sitting Stars govern health and relationship issues, and are activated by mountain forms and inactivity. In addition, the bedroom and kitchen are two of the three key factors determining the quality of a home's Feng Shui (see the Key Factors page for more details), so getting the Feng Shui of these locations right is very important.

Choosing the Ideal Bedroom Location

Positioning the bedroom in the correct sector, and the bed in the correct location within that sector, is one of the most important Feng Shui applications to perform in a residence. Ideally, the bedroom would be placed where either the 8-White, 9-Purple or 1-White Sitting Star resides.

Positioning the Bed

Now it is time to determine where to place the bed within the room. This makes use of a technique known as the "Small Tai Ji" application. The idea behind using the Small Tai Ji is that the patterns of Qi within a room are a microcosm of the patterns of Qi within the entire house. To use the Small Tai Ji application within a bedroom, you simply divide the bedroom into nine squares, suprimpose the Flying Stars onto the squares in the same orientation you used for the entire house, and locate the bed in one of the squares with an 8-White, 9-Purple or 1-White Sitting Star! It is important to remember a few points though:

  • First of all, the central palace isn't really usable, so even if the 8-White Star occupies the Sitting position of the central square in the Micro Tai Ji diagram, you can't place your bed there.
  • Secondly, the foot of the bed should not be aligned with a doorway. This is a negative internal form, and remember that forms always take precedence over formulae.
  • The head of the bed should ideally back onto a solid wall, as opposed to a window.
  • The bed should not be located under a beam. Ideally, it should also not be located under a sloping ceiling or a ceiling fan either.
  • External Landform Considerations

As external land features go, the best features to have outside the areas with auspicious Sitting Stars are actual mountains. In Feng Shui terms, a "mountain" simply refers to elevated land, not necessarily huge peaks (although they are excellent landforms to have around). Some practitioners say that buildings can take the place of mountains in an urban environment, but this isn't as effective. Remember, mountains are Yin land formations. Buildings house people and activity, so they aren't really Yin structures. In addition, natural mountains actually generate Qi, and manmade structures can only conduct Qi when they are large enough. No manmade object actually generates Qi. Furthermore, the presence of low-lying land or water outside the sector will deactivate the Sitting Star in favor of the Facing Star, so a careful evaluation of the external landforms is crucial.
