The Chinese Solar Calendar

The Eight Mansions system uses the Chinese solar calendar for its calculations, not the lunar calendar. This means that the year is always calculated from approximately February 4th, NOT from the date of the Chinese New Year from the given year, since the Chinese New Year is based on the lunar calendar. The cutoff date will always be plus or minus one day from February 4th.

Life Gua calculation takes into account the year of a person's birth (based on the Chinese solar calendar, as noted above), and the person's gender.

Performing the Calculation

  1. First take the last two digits of the year of birth and add them together.
  2. Keep adding, if needed, until you get to a single-digit number.
  3. For males, subtract the result from 10 to get the Gua.
  4. For females, add the result to 5 to get the Gua.
  5. If the result of the above calculations is 5, perform the additional steps below.
  6. For males, convert Gua 5 to Gua 2.
  7. For females, convert Gua 5 to Gua 8.
  8. For males born in the year 2000 or later, subtract the result from step 2 from 9 instead of 10.
  9. For females born in the year 2000 or later, add the result from step 2 to 6 instead of 5.

Examples

Male born in 1973

  1. Add 7 + 3 together to get 10.
  2. Add 1 + 0 together to get 1.
  3. Since the person is male, and he was born before the year 2000, subtract the result from 10. 10 - 1 = 9. The man has a Life Gua of 9.

Female born on January 20, 1978

  1. Since this is before the February 4th cutoff, we use 1977 for the year, not 1978.
  2. Add the last two digits together. 7 + 7 = 14.
  3. Add the digits together to reduce to a single number. 1 + 4 = 5.
  4. Since the person is female, add 5 to the result to get the Gua. 5 + 5 = 10.
  5. Reduce to a single number. 1 + 0 = 1. The woman has a Life Gua of 1.

Male born in 2008

  1. Add the years together. 0 + 8 = 8.
  2. Subtract the result from 9. 9 - 8 = 1.
  3. The boy has a Life Gua of 1.
