The Point System

Some practitioners try to apply "points" to the Wandering Stars, with positive Stars like Sheng Qi assigned positive numbers, and negative Stars like Wu Gui assigned negative numbers. The idea is to try and obtain as many positive points as possible.

This idea is not feasible. Each of the Wandering Stars is associated with one of the Five Phases. For example, Sheng Qi is associated with the Wood Phase, and Tian Yi is associated with the Earth Phase. According to the point system, a sector housing both Sheng Qi and Tian Yi would get a lot of points. In reality, the Phases would clash with one another.

Another factor working against the point system is the fact that it does not take forms into account.

Using the Life Gua Without the House Gua

The House Gua is used to select positive locations within the house. The Life Gua is used to match the occupants' Qi to the house's Qi. The House Gua's effect is more powerful than that of the Life Gua. A positive location according to the House Gua formula can benefit all residents, regardless of their personal Life Gua. Using the Life Gua system is like fine-tuning the Feng Shui. It only has about a 10-15% effect.

Door Tilting

Some practitioners tell clients to tilt doors to face a positive direction. This, too, is faulty advice.

Remember, forms always override formulas. If you tilt a door, it is likely that you would create a corner inside the house, jutting toward the living space. Any positive effect from the door direction would be overridden by the negative effect of the corner.

Using Water Features with Eight Mansions

Water features are sometimes placed at locations that are calculated to contain the Sheng Qi sector. This is not necessarily a good idea.

Eight Mansions Feng Shui is an internal Feng Shui method. It is not a system that is suitable for use in calculating where to place external water features.

Using Eight Mansions to Determine Compatibility Between People

A widely-held misconception is that East Group people are incompatible with West Group people, and vice-versa. According to this idea, people of opposing groups should not marry.

In fact, the Life Gua system is not suitable for use in determining the compatibility between people. This is better left to systems like "Purple Star" or "Bazi". These systems can analyze factors like personality, health, wealth and relationship issues. Life Gua is only to be used for assessing a person's affinity with a property.
